NEW mapping for Transport for Wales to elevate crowds at major event at the Principality Stadium

5 June 2026

Transport for Wales uses event mapping and planning strategies to manage the large crowds attending major events at the Principality Stadium, which can hold over 70,000 people.

TfW’s event mapping focuses on:

  • Moving large numbers of people safely and efficiently
  • Reducing congestion in Cardiff city centre
  • Supporting multi-modal travel (train, walking, cycling)

Rail services are central, as they carry “tens of thousands of people” to and from events.

Pindar Creative were appointed to develop new and improved -pre and -post event mapping to encourage sustainable transport options, and to ease the flow of passengers to the stadium, allowing passengers to plan their journeys in advance.

Red arrows indicate a 15-minute walk north to Cardiff Queen Street Station, and a route south to Cardiff Central Station and Bus Interchange. Stadium gates 1–7 are labelled. Station queues begin at 18:00.

The new map design focused on highlighting:

  • Clear walking routes between the station and stadium gates.
  • Helping direct passengers to specific entry/exit points and manage peak flows and improve safety and crowd management.
  • Encourages sustainable transport choices, by highlighting the close proximity of the rail station/s and highlighting walk times from and to the station including alternative routes for those needing accessible access.
  • Highlight the crowd flow and queuing systems in place to help reduce queuing times and ensure visitors use the correct access points.
  • Ensures efficient access to one of the UK’s busiest event venues.
